Spearfishing Charters in Northland & Auckland

Eco-conscious • Personalised • Unforgettable

Spearfishing isn’t just one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing watersports…

…it’s a way to connect with the ocean on its own terms. And Northland offers some of the best hunting grounds in the country. Whether you’re new to the sport or a seasoned spearo, Oceandiversity’s dedicated spearfishing charters give you the chance to chase iconic fish species in stunning, pristine waters.

With our focus on small groups, safety, and sustainability, every trip is designed to deliver not only an adrenaline rush but also a deep respect for the ecosystems we explore.

What you might encounter

Depending on the season, you could find yourself hunting: Big Snapper, Boar Fish, Kingfish, John Dory, Trevally, Kahawai, Crayfish (in season) and with luck, pelagic visitors like Marlin or Tuna.

Every catch is guided by local regulations and our own stricter, eco-conscious limits, ensuring your hunt is sustainable and the ocean remains healthy for future generations.

Explore Northland’s best spearfishing spots

Our six most popular locations

Hen & Chickens Islands

A favourite for both beginner and intermediate spearos. Shallow reefs and sheltered spots provide safe hunting grounds, while deeper walls challenge advanced divers. Expect Snapper, Trevally, and seasonal Crayfish.

Cape Brett & Motu Kōkako
(Hole in the Rock)

Iconic, rugged, and teeming with marine life. These waters offer a mix of pelagic opportunities and reef species in stunning settings. A go-to site when southerly winds make other areas less accessible.

Mokohinau Islands
(The Mokes)

Remote, pristine, and full of life — the Mokes are a spearfishing paradise. Expect world-class visibility, abundant pelagics, and the chance to target Kingfish and Snapper in unpressured waters.

Great Barrier Island

With depths ranging from 5m to 25m, the Great Barrier suits spearos of all levels. Hunt Snapper, Blue Mao Mao, and Butterfish around kelp forests, or chase Kingfish along dramatic walls.

Bay of Islands

A diver’s playground with wrecks, reefs, and sanctuaries, from the HMNZS Canterbury to marine-rich Deep Water Cove.
